Isophthalonitrile is a chemical compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Isophthalonitrile has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It also inhibits the growth of the fungus Candida albicans and the virus herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) in vitro. Isophthalonitrile has been found to be chemically stable in water vapor, as well as being resistant to oxidation by hydrogen peroxide. Isophthalonitrile is also known for its high nitrogen content and can act as a hydrogen bond acceptor molecule due to its electron donating properties. This chemical compound can be synthesized from acetylene by reacting it with phosphine gas.
