Description:

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a polymer that is used for a variety of purposes. It has been shown to be carcinogenic in mice, but the relevance of this finding to humans is unknown. PVP has been tested for toxicity in vitro and in vivo. In vitro tests have included transcriptomic analysis, which can provide information on the effect of PVP on gene expression. In vivo studies have been conducted using mouse tumor models, measuring toxicological effects such as chloride levels and health effects such as ovary weight. The toxicity of PVP isomers has been investigated using endpoints including assays involving ovaries, lungs, and kidneys.
PVP is often used in the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In these applications it may be treated to reduce its risk group classification from category 3 to category 2 or 1 by removing or replacing some chlorine atoms with hydrogen atoms so that it does not emit chloride during processing.
