Isoprothiolane is a chemical compound that has been shown to be synergistic with the herbicide paraquat. This synergy is due to the fact that paraquat induces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in wild-type bacteria, which damages and destroys bacterial membranes. Isoprothiolane inhibits ROS production by blocking the electron transport chain, which prevents ROS from damaging bacterial membranes. Isoprothiolane is also used as a chemical probe for investigating the interactions between membrane-bound enzymes. It has been shown to inhibit malonic acid synthesis in kidney bean cells and histological analysis has revealed that it causes liver lesions in rats exposed to paraquat. Isoprothiolane can be detected using surface methodology such as atomic force microscopy or scanning electron microscopy.
