Isoquinoline-1-carbonitrile (IQC) is a chlorinated quinoline derivative. It is chemically related to the antihypertensive drug, quinidine. Isoquinoline-1-carbonitrile has been used in structural studies and as a reagent for the synthesis of other quinoline derivatives. The elimination reactions of IQC are nucleophilic attack by chloride or hydrogen chloride to give the corresponding chlorides or hydrochlorides, respectively. These substances can be isolated by extraction with diethyl ether in triethyl orthoformate and then purified by recrystallization from n-dimethyl formamide. If irradiated with ultraviolet light, IQC may react with oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species that can initiate radical chain reactions and result in the formation of new reaction products.
