Iodoethane is an inorganic compound that is used as a catalyst. It is soluble in water and has a melting point of -11.8°C. Iodoethane has been used as a catalyst for the kinetic energy reaction between sodium carbonate and trifluoroacetic acid, which generates an exothermic reaction with water vapor. The use of this catalyst allows for the production of large quantities of sodium salts at lower temperatures than other catalysts, such as copper chips. Iodoethane can also be used to generate chitosan quaternary ammonium compounds, which are antimicrobial agents that have been shown to inhibit the growth of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria.
