D-Isoserine is also being investigated as a treatment for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. The marine sponge Aerogenes sp. produces this compound, which is also produced by the microbial species Aerobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.
