Isopropyl iodide is a sodium salt that can be activated. It has been shown to react with fatty acids, such as palmitic acid, at low energy and to produce a product with an nmr spectrum similar to the natural fatty acid methyl ester. Isopropyl iodide also reacts with HIV-1 protease and produces a hydroxyl group. This reaction mechanism may be related to the inhibition of HIV-1 replication. Isopropyl iodide is used in radiation therapy for inflammatory diseases or other conditions that are treated by radiation. It also has been used in chemical synthesis as a reactive agent for photoelectron spectroscopy.
