- MeSH ID: D007495
Iridium is a transition metal that belongs to the group of platinum-group metals. It has the ability to catalyze chemical reactions, especially in organic chemistry. Iridium can be used as a catalyst for the metathesis reaction, which involves the exchange of an organic group between two molecules. Iridium also has a redox potential that is higher than those of many other metals and this makes it useful for reducing other metals from their salts. The ligands are often coordinated to iridium through dative bonds with four ligands, forming a square planar geometry. This coordination geometry is not found in most organometallic complexes, which usually have octahedral or tetrahedral geometries. The complex is obtained by reacting iridium with picolinic acid and the reaction solution is then analyzed using X-ray diffraction to determine its structure.
