Iron(II) acetate is a salt formed by the reaction of ethylene diamine and iron(II). It has been proposed as an alternative to iron oxide for use in magnetic separation. Iron(II) acetate is a catalyst for the production of antimicrobial agents, which are used to control the growth of bacteria. Iron(II) acetate has also been shown to accelerate the production of angiogenic factors in response to nutrient solution and can be used as a solid catalyst for hydrogenation reactions. Iron(II) acetate is also used in detergent compositions because it binds with particulates and other small particles, such as soil and dust. This makes it possible for these materials to be removed from fabrics through washing. The particles are magnetically attracted to the iron, which are then removed during the rinse cycle.
