Isobutylnitrite is a nitric oxide donor that is used in clinical pathology and analytical chemistry as a marker for the presence of nitrite ion. Isobutylnitrite has been shown to induce angiogenesis and stimulate the production of various pro-angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). It also activates signal pathways in cells that are important for tissue development and body formation. This chemical has been found to be toxic to animal cells at high concentrations, but not at low concentrations. It can also cause autoimmune diseases, HIV infection, and cancer. Isobutylnitrite is an alkyl nitrite with the chemical formula C4H9NO2. It is highly reactive and decomposes easily into products such as carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), ozone (O3) or nitrous oxide (N2O).
