Ilexsaponin A1 is a bioactive compound isolated from the leaves of Ilex cornuta. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of oral pathogens in vivo and in vitro by inhibiting the activity of P-glycoprotein, an intracellular ATPase pump. Ilexsaponin A1 also inhibits the replication of HIV-1 and other human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). This compound has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of liver lesions induced by ethylene diamine and trifluoroacetic acid. The pharmacokinetics study of ilexsaponin A1 in rats showed that it is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, distributed in all tissues, and excreted mainly through urine. The half-life was found to be 2.3 hours.
