Koumine is a chemical inhibitor that is used as an analytical reagent in the analysis of biological samples. It has been found to inhibit the activities of many enzymes, such as DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase, and protein kinases. Koumine is also cytotoxic to cancer cells and can be used for treatment of bone cancer. Koumine has been shown to change mitochondrial membrane potentials in mice, which may lead to the development of locomotor activity. The most probable mechanism by which koumine inhibits enzyme activity is through binding to enzyme active sites and blocking them.
