Lauric acid-OSu is a molecule that is used to inhibit the growth of viruses. It binds to the viral envelope and blocks virus attachment to host cells, preventing infection. Lauric acid-OSu has been shown to have antiviral activity against influenza virus, hepatitis C virus and HIV-1. This drug also inhibits lipid peroxidation, which may be due to its amphipathic properties. The antiviral activity of Lauric acid-OSu has been demonstrated in animal models using liposomes as a carrier system. Lauric acid-OSu can be administered orally because it is absorbed well from the gastrointestinal tract and diffuses rapidly into cells by receptor binding.
