Labetalol is a drug that belongs to the group of beta blockers and is used in the treatment of hypertension. Labetalol works by blocking the action of adrenaline on blood vessels, which causes them to relax, thereby lowering blood pressure. Labetalol also has an anti-arrhythmic effect and can be used to prevent heart attacks. Labetalol is usually given intravenously or by mouth. The effects of labetalol may be delayed if it is taken with food or just after eating because food slows down the absorption process. A shift from one labetalol dosage form to another should not exceed 8 hours and should always be followed by a 12-hour rest period before starting a new shift. The optimal time for taking labetalol is in the morning on an empty stomach, as this gives a more stable level throughout the day and night. Detection of labetalol's plasma concentration is done using HPLC with ultraviolet detection at 254 nm
