Lipoxidase is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of lipids. Lipoxidases are found in many types of organisms, including bacteria, plants, and animals. The most common commercial use for lipoxidase is as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitor to prevent the formation of false DNA products. It can also be used to inhibit protein synthesis by interacting with ribosomes or to inhibit lipid peroxidation. Lipoxidase has been shown to have therapeutic effects in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, HIV infection, and radiation-induced damage. The plant lipoxygenase enzyme (LOX) is responsible for the synthesis of carotenoids in plants and may be involved in metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. In addition, LOX enzymes are also found in human cells where they are involved in many different reactions that include DNA repair, inflammation response, and oxidative stress resistance.
