Description:Lithium ethoxide is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with a fatty acid, such as palmitic acid, to form a lithium ester. It can be used for the synthesis of hydrocarbons and polymers. Lithium ethoxide is soluble in ethanol and has an UV absorption spectrum at about 260 nm. This solution is also used for gravimetric analysis because it is an ionizable substance that produces ions from its dissociation into Li+ and EtOH- by the addition of water. Lithium ethoxide reacts with an electrophile, such as benzoyl chloride or methyl iodide, to produce an alkyl lithium species. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of a carbocation intermediate followed by elimination of hydrogen chloride or iodine to form the final product. Lithium ethoxide has pharmacokinetic properties similar to other lithium salts and has been shown to have high resistance against bacteria particle penetration.
