The reaction mechanism is that the hydroxide ion reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to produce phosphoric acid and water. This then reacts with sodium carbonate to produce sodium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide. Finally, this reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce lithium chloride and iron(II) chloride.
