Lavendustin A (LAVA) is a novel, potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of the bcr-abl kinase. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human cells in vitro, including human leukemia cells, human lymphoma cells, and human breast carcinoma cells. Lavendustin A also inhibits HIV infection in vitro by blocking HIV-1 reverse transcriptase activity. The compound also promotes axonal growth in vivo and has neurotrophic effects on neurons in culture. This drug may be useful as a potential treatment for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
