(R)-(+)-a-Lipoic acid is a naturally occurring compound with antioxidant properties in the body. It is found in high concentrations in the kidney, liver, and pancreas, and is an important cofactor for mitochondrial enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of pyruvate to acetyl CoA. (R)-(+)-a-Lipoic acid has been shown to be effective against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity, oxidative injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury, diabetic neuropathy and other conditions. The exact mechanism of action of (R)-(+)-a-Lipoic acid is not known but it may be due to its ability to restore mitochondrial membrane potential or inhibit reactive oxygen species production. (R)-(+)-a-Lipoic acid has also been shown to reduce body mass index and glomerular filtration rate in mice.
