Lanthanum oxide (La2O3) is a redox potential and a thermal expansion coefficient that has been shown to be effective for wastewater treatment. Its high chemical stability makes it an ideal candidate for use in the presence of reactive species such as water vapor, phosphorus pentoxide, and sodium citrate. Lanthanum oxide also exhibits antimicrobial activity against a range of organisms such as Sarcina lutea, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Lanthanum oxide has been shown to induce apoptosis in malignant brain cells. This effect was found to be mediated by oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction induced by lanthanum ions.
