D-Leucine is an amide and a member of the group of fatty acids. It has been shown to have a high uptake in the body and is mainly used as a dietary supplement. D-Leucine is metabolized to acetyl-CoA in the mitochondria, where it is converted into acetoacetate by β-ketothiolase. Acetoacetate then undergoes a series of reactions to form acetone, which can be excreted through respiration or converted back into acetyl-CoA for use in energy production by the citric acid cycle. D-Leucine has been shown to be more effective at increasing muscle protein synthesis than other amino acids such as L-leucine or L-isoleucine. Some of the benefits of this supplement may be due to its ability to increase intracellular pH levels, which allows for better hydrogen bonding between amino acids during protein synthesis.
