Description

Longifolene is a natural compound that is found in many plants, including the leaves of rosemary and thyme. Longifolene has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This compound also inhibits the growth of cancer cells and induces apoptosis in leukemia cells. Longifolene can be used as an additive for food products. It can be extracted from the beans of kidney beans by a surface methodology that uses zirconium oxide as a catalyst. The reaction mechanism involves an asymmetric synthesis with 2 molecules of longifolene binding to one molecule of pyrimidine compound to form a zwitterion. Sample preparation involves extracting the zwitterion with ether or petroleum ether, followed by purification using chromatography with silica gel as the stationary phase and hexane as the eluent. This process produces pure longifolene without any other compounds or impurities.
