Z-L-leucine 4-nitrophenyl ester is a non-natural amino acid. It is a competitive trypsin inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the proteolytic activity of trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase. The kinetic parameters for this inhibitor are similar to those of natural substrates and inhibitors. Z-L-leucine 4-nitrophenyl ester binds reversibly to the active site of these enzymes, which prevents hydrolysis of protein substrates. This inhibition is reversible, as the enzyme can reactivate when the inhibitor is removed from the active site.
Z-L-leucine 4-nitrophenyl ester has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of proteinase activity in various tissues and cell cultures derived from animals and humans.
