Lacmoid is a galacturonidase that hydrolyzes the terminal galacturonic acid residues from the non-reducing ends of the polysaccharide chains in glycosaminoglycans. This enzyme is isolated from wild-type strain of Streptococcus equisimilis and has been shown to be effective against bacteria by cleaving the saccharides on their surface, which causes them to lose their ability to bind to cells. Lacmoid also has low energy requirements, which allows it to act at room temperature and even at low pH levels. This enzyme has been used for the analysis of urine samples for bacterial infections, as well as for other applications such as basic dyes, cell nuclei, antimicrobial peptides, and radiation. It is also used in primary cells to measure potassium dichromate.
