Limaprost is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the group of coumarin derivatives. It is used in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, and has also been shown to reduce blood levels of cholesterol. Limaprost can be administered orally or topically, and blocks prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase. Limaprost is available as a tablet and injection for oral use. The drug is also used for relief of pain in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and other musculoskeletal disorders. Limaprost is metabolized by esterases in the liver to form desacetyllimaprost (DALP), which has approximately one-third the potency of limaprost.
