Description

Z-ligustilide is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit the DNA polymerase activity of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It also has an effect on BCL-2 protein levels in human lung cancer cells. The inhibition of HIV replication by Z-ligustilide may be due to its ability to bind to nuclear dna, a significant cytotoxicity, and its matrix effect. The binding of Z-ligustilide to BCL-2 protein may be due to the ligustilide moiety, which is capable of binding to DNA. Z-ligustilide is a potent inhibitor of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), suggesting it may be useful for treating drug resistance caused by overexpression or mutations in the MDR1 gene.
