Lecanoric acid is a lichen metabolite with antioxidative properties. It inhibits the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-arginine to nitric oxide, which is an important mediator of inflammation. Lecanoric acid also prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species. The polymerase chain reaction technique has been used to measure the amount of lecanoric acid in lichens and other organisms. Usnic acid and gyrophoric acid are two other components in lichens that may have similar effects as lecanoric acid.
Lecanoric acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of probiotic bacteria and has a pH optimum at 4-5. It is extracted from lichen by acetate extraction or water vapor.
