Lucigenin is a model system for chemiluminescence. It is used as a fluorescence probe in the detection of reactive oxygen species and dinucleotide phosphate. Lucigenin has been shown to have physiological effects, such as inhibiting the activity of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes and the synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators. Lucigenin is also an excellent chemiluminescent substrate and has been used in wastewater treatment. Optimum concentration for lucigenin is 2 mM with hl-60 cells, while it must be at least 1 mM with human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
