Lathyrol is a natural product which has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on skin cancer cells and significant cytotoxicity against multidrug-resistant cancer cells. It is a lipophilic and non-polar compound that is extracted from the seeds of Lathyrus sativus, also known as the common vetch or field pea. Lathyrol inhibits the activity of an efflux pump that pumps out antibiotics and other compounds from bacterial cells. The chemical composition of lathyrol includes diterpenes and phorbol, which are aromatic hydrocarbons found in plants such as Euphorbiae erythraea. In addition, lathyrol contains fatty acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid.
