Lignin is a complex, heterogeneous, and chemically reactive natural polymer. It is the principal structural material in many plants and consists of a mixture of phenolic compounds. Lignin accounts for up to 25% of the dry weight of woody tissue, and is considered to be a renewable resource because it can be recycled from wood processing waste streams. Lignin has been shown to have excellent adsorbent properties for fatty acids and aromatic hydrocarbons in wastewater treatment processes. The chemical reactions that occur during lignin degradation are complex and not well-understood. However, it has been proposed that the oxidation of lignin involves hydroxylation, oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds, dehydrogenation, decarboxylation, and the formation of new functional groups such as carbonyl groups or hydroxyl groups. Some studies have also suggested that lignin may play an important role in biodiesel production.
