4-Methoxybenzonitrile is a diazonium salt that has been used as a model of the acidic environment of tyrosinase. It has been shown to react with the hydroxyl group on tyrosine and produce an intermediate that reacts with another molecule of 4-methoxybenzonitrile to form an adduct, which is then hydrolyzed. The chloride atom in the molecule provides the deshielding effect for the aromatic ring and facilitates electron delocalization. This reaction is reversible, with the product either being regenerated or converted into a cyanide ion. In addition, 4-methoxybenzonitrile can be used as a probe for identifying adenosine receptors in human brain tissue by its ability to cause relaxation of vascular smooth muscle cells via activation of adenosine A3 receptors. It also has anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting COX-2 and iNOS enzyme activity.
