5-Methylquinoxaline is a reactive compound that has been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis. It has proapoptotic effects on human cells and can be used as an oxidant in the preparation of samples for oxidative dna analysis. 5-Methylquinoxaline reacts with hydroxyl groups to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mitochondria, which are involved in apoptosis and mitochondrial function. The kinetic study showed that 5-methylquinoxaline is a competitive inhibitor of human serum albumin and its reaction mechanism is similar to that of other stilbene derivatives. This compound also inhibits the production of ROS by mitochondria, which may contribute to its proapoptotic effects in human cells.
