4-Methyl-3-nitrophenol is a chemical compound that has been used as a herbicide and an insecticide. It is sold under the trade name of Mecoprop. 4-Methyl-3-nitrophenol is also known to have antiseptic properties and has been used in the treatment of skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. 4-Methyl-3-nitrophenol can be synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with nitric acid and phenols. This reaction produces a mixture of methylated phenols, including 4-(methylthio)phenol, which can be separated from the other compounds by chromatography and then treated with concentrated sodium hydroxide to produce 4-methyl-3-nitrophenol.
