Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is an organic chemical compound that is used as a preservative in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other industrial applications. Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is also used in wastewater treatment plants as a coagulant to remove suspended solids. It is prepared by reacting benzoic acid with methanol. The methyl ester of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid has been shown to induce apoptosis in human cancer cells by inhibiting the ryanodine receptor and controlling the release of calcium from intracellular stores. This chemical also has genotoxic activity which may be due to the reaction between methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has a high boiling point, which makes it difficult to dissolve in water.
