Magnesium silicate is a synthetic compound that is used as an additive to prevent corrosion in metalworking fluids. Its reaction mechanism is not fully understood, but it may be related to its ability to scavenge free radicals and form stable complexes with metal ions. Magnesium silicate is biodegradable, with a half-life of approximately 15 days. It can be detected by various analytical methods, including gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or electron microscopy (EM). The profile of magnesium silicate includes magnesium and silicon. It has been shown to have synergistic effects when combined with other additives, such as borax and citric acid. This additive predominately reacts with organic compounds, including pesticides and detergents.
