Milnacipran hydrochloride is a drug that has been approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and fibromyalgia. It is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that increases the levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain. Milnacipran is thought to work by binding to the presynaptic membrane of neurons, where it prevents the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine into the neuron. Milnacipran has been shown to have serotonergic activity in vitro, but not in vivo. This means that milnacipran does not bind or act on serotonin receptors in the organism. Milnacipran's side-effect profile includes nausea, dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, diarrhea, vomiting, and headache.
