2-Methyl benzyl bromide is a chemical compound that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of acid secretion and to reduce the proliferation of colorectal adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. 2-Methyl benzyl bromide can be prepared by the reaction between benzyl alcohol and methyl iodide in the presence of a base, such as calcium carbonate, yielding 2-methylbenzyl bromide. The reaction proceeds via an intramolecular hydrogen transfer from the alcohol group to the halogen atom. This process is catalyzed by acid transporters, which are calcium dependent. The asymmetric synthesis of 2-methylbenzyl bromide was achieved using an HPLC method with isooctane as a mobile phase.
