Methylchloroacetate (MCA) is a chemical compound that is used for the treatment of skin cancer. It is a metabolite of chloral hydrate and is hydrolyzed to formaldehyde and chloride ions. MCA has shown anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. MCA also has been found to inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and meningitis. It binds to DNA by forming covalent bonds with the aromatic hydrocarbon group on guanine residues in DNA, inhibiting the replication process. This results in the formation of pyrimidine dimers which are highly carcinogenic lesions. MCA can also react with ethylene diamine to form N-methylformamide, which can lead to depression in humans.
