[(4-Methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromen-7-yl)oxy]acetic acid is a potential use for the production of iron oxide particles used in microscopy. It is synthesized by reacting 4-methylcoumarin with acetic anhydride. The reaction product is then purified by gel permeation chromatography, which separates it from other components and chloride salts. This compound can be used as a starting material for cellulose derivatives and trimethylammonium chloride.
