Methyl 5-nitro-2-furoate is a synthetic compound that has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth. It binds to the ion channels and blocks the influx of calcium ions into the cancer cell, which inhibits its ability to activate. Methyl 5-nitro-2-furoate also inhibits the production of nitric oxide, which is an important mediator for inflammation and tumor promotion. Methyl 5-nitro-2-furoate has been shown to have antitubercular activity in vitro and in animal models, as well as colon cancer activity in vivo. This compound may be effective against other cancers that are activated by cellular signaling pathways.
