Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that has been shown to be effective against bacteria that cause chronic bronchitis, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. It also has been shown to have significant interactions with other drugs. Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes that are needed for bacterial replication and transcription. Moxifloxacin is active against a variety of bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, it is not active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Moxifloxacin may be prescribed as an alternative treatment for infections caused by these organisms when other antibiotics are ineffective or contraindicated.
