Methanesulfonic acid methyl ester is an alkylating agent that binds to the DNA and causes double-strand breaks. It has been shown to have synergistic effects with other agents in inducing cell transformation, such as radiation or methyl methanesulfonate. Methanesulfonic acid methyl ester is used in a model system to study the repair of DNA damage by wild-type strains of human cells. This chemical can also cause oxidative injury to cells, which may be due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species.
