2-Methoxythioanisole is a volatile oil that has low affinity for sulfides and is transferred by hydrogen bonding. It can be used as an analytical reagent in the determination of peroxide, and also acts as a catalyst for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. 2-Methoxythioanisole has been shown to have anti-cancer properties and can be used to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. This may be due to its ability to act as an electron donor, which reduces phosphotungstate or sulfide ions to form reactive oxygen species (e.g., hydrogen peroxide).
