L-Methyl lactate is a chiral molecule that is an ester of methanol and lactic acid. L-Methyl lactate has been used as a reactive solvent in kinetic energy reactions, as well as in the synthesis of organic compounds. The selectivity and reactivity of L-Methyl lactate are increased by intramolecular hydrogen bonding and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. L-Methyl lactate has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the reaction of formaldehyde with nitric oxide to produce formamide and nitrous oxide. This reaction is catalyzed by water, which is present in both reactants.
