It has been shown to be an intermediate in the formation of crotonic acid, alpha-methyl styrene, and aromatic hydrocarbons. 2-Methyl-1H-indene has been found in soil bacteria. An experiment using argon as a reactant showed that it could form reaction products with styrene such as ammonium nitrate, naphthalene, and isomerizations.
