The reactions are catalyzed by hydrophobic effect, which helps to bind the methyl phenylacetate with trifluoroacetic acid and form the bound form. This then reacts with hydroxy methyl or dihydroconiferyl alcohol, forming methyl phenacyl acetate as the product.
