Methyldibenzylamine (MDBA) is an amine that has been shown to be a substrate for the Staudinger reduction reaction. This reaction is a chemical process that converts an organic compound with a hydroxyl group into an alkene and ammonia by the addition of hydrochloric acid. The frequency shift in the infrared spectrum of MDBA, which is due to the formation of hydrogen chloride, has been used as a sample preparation technique for this substance. A hydroxyl group in MDBA reacts with malonic acid to form an acid complex. An acidic solution can be prepared using this reaction mechanism, which can then be analyzed using gravimetric analysis or by plasma mass spectrometry.
