Methylcyclopenta-1,3-diene is a solid catalyst that is used in the exothermic trimerization of cyclopentadiene (CC) to 1,3-butadiene (BD). This reaction requires low energy and the activation energies for this process are high. The reaction mechanism for this process has been determined by studying the nmr spectra of CC and BD. The chlorine atom is added to CC to produce chlorocyclopentadiene. The chlorocyclopentadiene then reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce dihydrochlorinated cyclopentadiene and methylcyclopenta-1,3-diene. In order for CC to react with hydrogen chloride, it must first undergo a chemical species called trimerization. Trimerization is an intermediate step in the synthesis of methylcyclopenta-1,3-diene.
