3-Methyl-5-nitroisoquinoline is a 6-nitroisoquinoline that can be obtained by the nitration of 3-methylisoquinoline with concentrated nitric acid. 3-Methyl-5-nitroisoquinoline has been shown to react with alkenes, olefins, and cyclopentanes in an electrophilic addition reaction to form tetracyclic compounds. Cycloadditions reactions have also been observed when 3-methyl-5-nitroisoquinoline reacts with epoxides and aldehydes. The methyl group on this compound may undergo alkylation reactions. The ionic form of 3-methyl-5-nitroisoquinoline is covalently bonded to a halide ion.
