3-Methoxy-2-nitropyridine is a nitroarene that is activated by the addition of a methoxy group. It is a weak acid that can release NO and HNO with a pK of 3.8. The synthesis of 3-Methoxy-2-nitropyridine starts with the conversion of 2,4-dinitrobenzene to aniline and then to 2,6-diaminopyridine and finally to 3,5-dimethylpyridine. The reaction mechanism for this compound begins with the nucleophilic attack of methoxide on the nitro group followed by elimination of methoxide in order to form a tetrahedral intermediate. This intermediate reacts with another molecule of nitrite ion to form the final product.
